Historic Route 66 in Amarillo, Texas

Drove down to Texas and back with the family vacation and managed to arrange the return trip through Amarillo, Texas to see a bit of historic Route 66. First stop was Cadillac Ranch which is ten Cadillacs nose down in a field in 1974. They are covered in a very thick layer of spray paint and empty paint cans litter the field around them. Its become tradition to add your own touch as you visit. Unfortunately it seems quite a lot of people have been tearing of bits of tires, roof, etc as a souvenir so it has deteriorated quite bit.

There is a section of the old Route 66 in Amarillo that is designated as a tourist area and a made a visit to that as well. Unfortunately it sounded rather more grand than it was in real life. There was a few restaurants and stores but really nothing much automotive related. Much of it was quite run down. There was a few storage yards and car sale lots with a few interesting finds but struck me as a missed opportunity to create a car guy destination.
