Laforza – odd ball luxury SUV

The Laforza is an interesting beast as it is an Americanized version of the Rayton Fissore Magnum 4×4. The Magnum was first shown at the Turin Motor Show in 1985 and sold in Europe with a choice of Fiat four cylinder, Alfa Romeo V6 as well as a handful of four cylinder diesel engines. The chassis was a shrunken Iveco 4×4 40-10 frame with Iveco suspension, brakes and differentials. Initially the Alfa Romeo V6 was going to be used in North America but a merger of Fiat and Alfa Romeo caused a supplier change to Ford. For its North American release the Ford 5.0L V8 and four speed automatic transmission was selected initially. A HO 5.0L V8, Ford 5.8L V8 and a GM Vortec 6.0 V8 where later offered. The GM 6.0L V8 was even offered with Eaton supercharging to bring power to 455 hp @ 5200 rpm and torque to 495 ft / lb (68.4kgm) @ 4000 rpm. The interior was upgraded as well to help it compete with Range Rover. In Europe some diesel powered ones where sold to government agencies as well a few amour-ed versions. The Laforza was sold until 2003 in the US but was discontinued earlier in Europe, officially in 1993.
