Description:

The early cars where built in the Speke factory and almost all have a 4-speed manual gearbox or a 3-speed automatic. Visually the early cars have TR7 script at the front on bottom of the bonnet/hood. The rear has Triumph in smaller letters followed by TR7 in large letter on the boot/trunk lip. The 5-speed manual gearbox was offered starting in 1977 and was standard in North America. Also in 1977 a sunroof was offered and wheel trim rings went silver to black. Production moved to Canley for 1978 although there are very few 1978 models due to worker strikes. These Canley built cars can be identified by the large wreath logo on the slightly revised bonnet/hood with Triumph written in the middle. The 5-speed gearbox was now standard and alloy wheels where now made available as an option. The long awaited convertible arrived in 1979. Production again moved for 1980 to Rover’s Solihull plant. These cars can be identified by the small raised badge on the hood/bonnet.

Specifications: Front engine/rear drive. 1,998cc OHC 4-cylinder engine (105bhp), or 1,998cc OHC 4-cylinder engine (92bhp) in North America. 4-speed manual gearbox, 5-speed manual gearbox or 3-speed automatic gearbox. Wheelbase 85 inches.
Sold against: Datsun 260/280Z, MG B, Mazda Rx-7, Fiat X1/9
Body styles: 2-door sports car
Production: 141,232

Description:

TR8s are interesting as pre-production cars where built as early as 1978. These where coupes and usually with an automatic transmission. They didn’t have any nose decorations and where sold off as used cars. 1980 saw the introduction of the TR8 convertible and no further coupes. TR8s 1980 and earlier have twin Zenith-Stromberg carburettors and 1981 and 1982 (there where a few) feature Bosch L-jetronic fuel injection. Early TR8 convertibles where built as Canley and don’t have the wreath like the TR7 but instead have large, stylish TR7 script on the bonnet/hood and 3.5 litre decals on the fenders. Solihull TR8’s have the same small hood/bonnet decals as the TR7 but say TR8 on the boot/trunk.

Specifications: Front engine/rear drive. 3528cc OHV 8-cylinder engine (133-148bhp). 5-speed manual gearbox or 3-speed automatic gearbox. Wheelbase 85 inches.
Sold against: Datsun 260/280Z, MG B, Mazda Rx-7
Body styles: 2-door sports car
Production: 2,746
